Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, November 16, according to PC World, MediaTek reaffirmed its plan to enter the Windows on Arm PC market, requiring further investment in CPU and GPU to meet the application's need for higher performance.

At an executive summit hosted by the company, MediaTek executives said they saw a $40 billion opportunity in the PC market and that MediaTek would join the market by launching a new Kompanio mobile processor. MediaTek also plans to provide built-in 5G wireless connectivity, Bluetooth, WiFi and display IC for laptops.

Vince Hu, vice president of MediaTek, said MediaTek plans to shift from "low power to high power" and apply some of its Arm technology to PC, which is used in smartphone chips such as the Tianji processor family. He also mentioned "the recognition that we must support higher-performance applications, and that we must make some greater investment in CPU and GPU as a basic capability."

CTOnews.com previously reported that MediaTek announced in November 2021 that it would launch chips for the Windows on ARM market, but did not disclose specific plans.

Qualcomm dominates ARM-based Windows PC, but it has been a bumpy road. Qualcomm did not bring big waves to the market from Snapdragon 835 to Snapdragon 8cx and entry-level Snapdragon 7c. MediaTek seems more likely to start by competing with Snapdragon 7c, which has already developed chips for Chromebook.
