CTOnews.com, Nov. 16, Omdia released a report today that the import of head-up display (HUD) into the automotive industry is growing rapidly, but it is still mainly limited to some high-end models. HUD shipments are expected to reach 6 million in 2022, an annual YoY growth of 7 per cent.

CTOnews.com learned that there are two types of car HUD, depending on the projection destination, including W-HUD (windshield, where information is projected onto the windshield) and C-HUD (combiner, where information is projected onto a dedicated projection board).

The report points out that W-HUD is more challenging in technical development because the windshield is vulnerable to external interference, such as ambient light, dust and optical distortion (because the windshield is not flat). The picture needs to be corrected after projection, so it is more technically challenging. C-HUD uses a dedicated projection board to project; the shape of the projection board is usually a small transparent display board located above the ICD, the advantage is that the optical effect is easier to optimize, the disadvantage is smaller, and there is no W-HUD to watch more naturally. More mainstream W-HUD has a larger field of view (FOV) angle, want to be able to coincide with the driver's realistic vision in front, but also can display more information.

Omdia said that although automotive HUD applications are getting more and more attention, they are not yet fully mature in micro-display panels, optical engine optimization and shape. In addition, HUD also needs to have a clear positioning strategy to work with dashboard display panel (ICD) and central control display panel (CSD). In addition, it has to wait for some growth stimuli to be formed to improve use. Especially augmented reality (AR) based on automobile machine vision, once mature, should be able to make HUD a valuable and practical function.
