CTOnews.com, Nov. 16-A federal jury in Texas said Tuesday that Intel must pay $948.8 million (about 6.708 billion yuan) to VLSI Technology LLC for infringing a VLSI computer chip patent.

CTOnews.com learned that VLSI, a patent holding company owned by private equity firm Fortress Investment Group of the Softbank Corp. Group, found in a six-day trial that Intel's Cascade Lake and Skylake microprocessors infringed its patents covering data processing improvements that VLSI bought from Dutch chipmaker NXP Semiconductor.

An Intel spokesman said the company "strongly opposes" the decision and plans to appeal the case, which is "one of many examples of the urgent need for reform of the U.S. patent system."

Last March, VLSI won another trial in Texas over patents for different chips. Intel was awarded nearly $2.2 billion in damages, and Intel has filed an appeal. In April, VLSI lost another related patent trial against Intel.

A lawyer for VLSI said in the latest trial that Intel's chip caused "millions of violations per second" and the jury awarded the company all the damages it had claimed. An Intel lawyer said in the trial that the company's engineers independently developed its innovation and that its modern microprocessors would not be used with VLSI's outdated technology.

Two other patent cases filed by VLSI against Intel are still pending in Northern California and Delaware. The California trial will begin in 2024.
