CTOnews.com, November 16, AirPods Pro 2 has many improvements over the previous generation, many of which are implemented by internal new H2 chips. New tests by musician and software developer Stephen Coyle reveal another hidden benefit of the new AirPods Pro 2 and H2 chips: a significant improvement in latency.

CTOnews.com learned that one of the drawbacks of Bluetooth (and general wireless technology) has always been delay, which is the time difference between the sound on the device and the sound being played through the AirPods. This is not a problem for video playback because the video picture can be slightly delayed to ensure sound and picture synchronization.

However, for some "unpredictable" sounds, such as notifications, sound effects, keyboard clicks, audio editing, etc., delay can be a problem.

Compared with the original AirPods, the latency performance of the original AirPods Pro has been greatly improved, and the latest generation of AirPods Pro 2 is further in this aspect.

The test method used by Coyle includes the following: connect the AirPods to the iPad Pro and click on the screen with Apple Pencil. Use a tape recorder to capture the sound of physical percussion, as well as the sound produced at AirPods, and then measure the time difference between these sounds. Unlike previous tests, this time only the sound delay of keystroke was measured.

In the chart above, you can see the progress Apple has made in improving AirPods latency over the past few years. According to Coyle, AirPods Pro 2 "outperformed its predecessors by about 40 milliseconds, with an average delay of 126ms, compared with 167ms for the previous generation."

Coyle also said that what is more noteworthy is that the latency of the second-generation AirPods Pro is only worse than that of the built-in speaker (83ms) 43ms. This shows that up to 2/3 of the time between touching the screen and hearing the sound occurs before the Bluetooth data leaves the device.

In the end, Coyle concluded that he still believes that there are too many delays in AirPods Pro 2 sound, but that said, it is possible to make further improvements in terms of equipment rather than in AirPods itself.
