CTOnews.com, Nov. 15 (Reuters)-Italy announced a ban on facial recognition and "smart glasses" on Monday, and its data protection bureau reprimanded two cities that were testing these technologies.

CTOnews.com learned that the privacy watchdog said that facial recognition systems containing biometric data would not be allowed until a specific law was passed, or at least until the end of next year, unless the technology was used in judicial investigations or in the fight against crime.

However, municipalities that want to use these equipment must reach an "urban safety agreement" with representatives of the central government.

The southern Italian city of Lecce had previously said it would start using a facial recognition-based technology and was ordered to provide details of the system used, its purpose and legal basis, as well as a list of databases accessed by its monitoring equipment. In addition, the privacy watchdog also blocked the city of Arezzo in Tuscany, which planned to get local police to be equipped with infrared super glasses that could recognize car license plates.
