CTOnews.com, Nov. 14 (Xinhua)-- the Indian smartphone market fell 10% year-on-year to 43.5 million units last quarter, the lowest third-quarter shipments since 2019, and high inventory accumulation is expected to lead to lacklustre performance in the fourth quarter, market research firm IDC reported on Monday.

IDC said that although the holiday season began earlier than usual, the relentless rise in prices pulled down shipments in the world's second-largest smartphone market. The average selling price rose 15% year-on-year and 6% from the previous quarter to a record $226 (currently about 1607 yuan).

"average selling prices have continued to increase for eight consecutive quarters due to increased costs and moderate premium growth in 5G shipments," said Upasana Joshi, IDC client device research manager.

In addition, Navkendar Singh, assistant vice president of equipment research at IDC, said inventory buildup and post-holiday demand contraction would lead to weak performance in the fourth quarter.

CTOnews.com learned that IDC expects India to ship about 150 million smartphones in 2022, down 8-9% from the previous year. The main challenges into 2023 are the impact of inflation on consumer demand, the increase in device costs and the slow migration of feature phones to smartphones.
