Elon Musk, the boss of Twitter, had another war of words with his critics on Sunday, Beijing time. This time, he infuriated a prominent senator on the Commerce Committee of the U.S. Congress.

Musk's Blue V certification went wrong this time against Democratic Senator Ed Markey, who is a member of the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. The commission has the power to investigate Musk and his company and oversees the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Here's what happened. With Markey's consent, an American journalist created a fake account certified by Twitter Blue V in the name of Markey to show how easy it is to impersonate other people on Twitter. In response, Markey asked Musk to explain and criticized Musk for putting profits before people and his debts more important than preventing false information.

Musk laughed at the result, and Musk made an insulting response on Sunday. "maybe it's because your real account sounds like a fake." Musk said so.

Markey then retaliated against Musk, making no secret of his threat. "one of your companies is being regulated by a FTC consent order. Meanwhile, NHTSA, the auto safety regulator, is investigating the death of another of your companies. And you spend your time picking up trouble online. Solve your company's problem, or Congress will solve it for you."

At the heart of Markey's threat to investigate Musk's company is Twitter's hastily launched authentication service Twitter Blue. Under the new Musk-sponsored service, anyone can get a Blue V certification for as little as $8. As a result, this has led many people to impersonate big brands and celebrities and post misleading tweets. Later, Twitter was forced to suspend the registration of Twitter Blue.
