CTOnews.com, November 14, according to the Nikkei News, Sony will build a new semiconductor factory in Thailand to produce automotive image sensors, shift labor-intensive jobs from Japan to Thailand, control production costs by spreading its production base around the world, and build a semiconductor supply chain that can respond to emergencies.

According to reports, Sony will invest about 10 billion yen (about 510 million yuan) to build a new building in its production base in central Thailand. Work is already under way and the plant will start operating in the fiscal year ending in March 2025.

The new factory will be responsible for making a new image sensor, but unlike the common Exmor like IMX766, the new line focuses on vehicle chips, which are designed to identify pedestrians and obstacles for self-driving cars.

Once completed, Sony's production in Thailand will directly increase to 170%, and the company will employ 2000 people to work at the plant.

The Nikkei pointed out that Sony's front-end process on the wafer, a key component of semiconductors, will be completed in Japan, while the Thai factory will only carry out the back-end processing, turning the wafer into a thin chip, which will be exported worldwide.

CTOnews.com has learned that Sony currently handles most of the front-end and back-end processes of car sensors at its Japanese plant, and the company now appears to be planning to focus its Japanese efforts on front-end processing and let its Thai operations take over the rest.
