Previously, the coveted blue check mark was reserved for the certified accounts of politicians, celebrities, journalists and other public figures. But earlier this week, Twitter launched a new subscription service, Twitter Blue, which costs $8 and supports account authentication, which is open to anyone who is prepared to pay, in order to help Twitter increase its revenue. At present, Musk is trying to retain advertisers.

However, since the launch of the paid authentication service, many fake accounts of big brands have sprung up on Twitter, including Musk's Tesla, SpaceX, game platforms Roblox, Nestl é and Lockheed Martin. For example, a verified account with the same profile photo as Tesla's official account posted a large number of misleading tweets.

Lilly, a US pharmaceutical company, issued an apology after a fake user posted on Twitter that insulin would be free. The company said and reiterated its Twitter user name.

"in order to combat counterfeiting, we have added 'official' tags to some accounts," Twitter support account said on Friday. The tag was first launched on Wednesday, but was "strangled" by Musk a few hours later.

Musk's reversal reflects the current chaos on Twitter. Twitter has been in chaos for two weeks since Musk completed the $44 billion acquisition. Musk fired nearly half of Twitter's employees, replaced the board and executives, and raised the possibility of Twitter going bankrupt. The Federal Trade Commission said on Thursday that it was "deeply concerned" about Twitter.
