Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Beijing time, November 12, Musk is still the same Musk, but Twitter has made him "beyond recognition".
Immediate layoffs on October 28, hours after Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter the night before, he summoned several human resources executives to the "war room" of Twitter's San Francisco office. Six people familiar with the matter said Mr Musk told them that he was preparing for mass layoffs. Twitter needs to lay off staff immediately, and employees who have been laid off will not be able to receive the bonus originally scheduled for November 1, he said.
Twitter executives warned their new boss that his plan could violate the Employment Law, violate the company's contracts with employees, and trigger lawsuits by employees, according to people familiar with the matter. But Mr Musk's team says he is used to going to court and paying fines and is not worried about the risks. As a result, Twitter's human resources, accounting and legal departments are scrambling to find ways to comply with his orders.
Two days later, Musk knew exactly how much these potential fines and lawsuits might cost. Delays are also increasing as Twitter managers haggle over which employees to fire. As a result, Musk decided to wait until November 1 before layoffs.
The immediate layoff order and the ensuing panic and change of attitude reflect the chaos Twitter has been in since Mr Musk took over the company two weeks ago. The 51-year-old CEO put forward the idea of how Twitter should be run, but did not have a comprehensive implementation plan. Then he soon learned the business, legal and financial complexities of running a platform called the Global City Plaza.
Twitter has changed beyond recognition than it was a month ago. Last week, Musk laid off about half of its 7500 employees, and executives continue to resign. False information on Twitter surged during Tuesday's mid-term elections. At the same time, a key project for Twitter to expand its subscription revenue has encountered obstacles. Some advertisers are shocked by the current state of Twitter.
The painful process is based on information provided by 36 current and former Twitter employees, people close to the company, as well as internal documents and workplace chats, and the consequences of Mr Musk's clean-up of Twitter are often painful. Some executives were fired directly by email. An engineering manager vomited into the dustbin when he was told to lay off hundreds of workers. Others slept in the office and worked exhausted to meet Musk's requirements.
On October 26, Musk carried a white porcelain sink through the glass door of the building and came to Twitter's San Francisco office. "immerse yourself in it." He posted a tweet on Twitter with a video of his grand entrance.
Musk carried a sink into Twitter headquarters and Leslie Berland, Twitter's chief marketing officer, encouraged employees to greet Musk and accompany him through the office. He was seen chatting with employees in the company's coffee bar.
But the atmosphere soon changed. Two people familiar with the matter said that the next day, Twitter CEO Palag Agrawal (Parag Agrawal) and CFO Ned Siegel (Ned Segal) were in the office. When they knew that Musk's acquisition of Twitter was completed that afternoon, they left the building, unsure what the new boss would do.
Soon, Agravar and Siegel received an email saying they had been fired. Vijaya Vijaya Gadde, Twitter's chief legal and policy director, and Sean Sean Edgett, general counsel, were also fired. Egit was in Twitter's office and he was escorted away.
That night, Twitter held a Halloween party called "funny or Trick or Tweet" for employees and their families. Some employees wear holiday costumes and try to maintain the festive atmosphere. The others hugged each other in tears.
The scale of layoffs has been constantly changing. Twitter managers were initially told to cut 25 per cent of their jobs, according to three people familiar with the matter. However, Tesla, an engineer who reviewed the Twitter code, suggested further cuts to the engineering team. At the same time, executives in charge of other parts of Twitter were told to expand the list of layoffs.
As Twitter managers worked out the layoff list, Musk flew to New York to meet with advertisers, who are Twitter's financiers. Most of Twitter's revenue comes from advertisers. Brands such as Volkswagen, General Motors and United Airlines have said they will suspend advertising on Twitter while assessing the impact of Mr Musk's entry into Twitter.
At meetings with some advertisers, Mr Musk proposed a system that allows Twitter users to choose the type of content the service provides to them, meaning brands can better place targeted ads on the platform, according to people familiar with the matter. He also promised to improve products and provide more personalized services for users and advertising.
But his effort was affected by the departure of two Twitter executives in New York: Bolan, Twitter's chief marketing officer, and JP JP Maheu, vice president of advertising. They are all famous in advertising.
Lou Paskalis, a senior advertising executive, said the Twitter executives "have a good relationship with the top of the Fortune 500 and they are very transparent and tolerant. These things can generate a lot of trust. But now these things have been questioned."
By 06:00 last week, Mr Musk's advisers realized that the layoffs might be too large, according to four people familiar with the matter. As a result, some people asked laid-off engineers, designers and product managers to return to their original jobs.
At Goldbird, Twitter's revenue division, the company had to recall executives in charge of key moneymaking products that "no one else knows how to do", according to people familiar with the matter. One manager agreed to try to rehire some laid-off employees, but expressed concern that they were "weak, lazy, unmotivated and may even oppose Elon-led Twitter".
On Monday, some Twitter employees went to work and found that some of the systems they relied on were no longer working. In San Francisco, an engineer found that some of the company's contracts with suppliers who provided user data management software had been shelved or expired, and managers and executives who could solve the problem had been fired or resigned.
By Wednesday, workers in Twitter's New York office could not even use WiFi because the server room was overheated and the Internet went offline.
