Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
On Wednesday, local time, Mark Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta plans to cut jobs by 13%, which means more than 11000 employees will be forced to leave. After the layoff order was issued, many employees felt frustrated, overwhelmed and even angry, but others accepted the layoffs calmly.
An employee who worked on the Meta recruitment team spoke anonymously about how he felt about being laid off: losing his job feels bad, but I think Zuckerberg handled it appropriately and humanely.
The following is the employee's self-description: for a long time, Meta has always been the company I most want to join. I had two previous interviews, but both failed, so when they contacted me at the end of last year and told me that I had been accepted, I was really excited. I come from an immigrant family, and it's a dream come true to work for a company that everyone knows, many people have used its products and can get an enviable salary.
Act as a recruiter in the business department
My team is responsible for recruiting people for all the business divisions in Meta's global operations, including Instagram, Facebook, Whatsapp and Oculus VR. This is one of the most organized and efficient recruitment departments I have ever worked for. Whether in terms of management or organization, my team is extraordinary. This is really a company that I want to work for for a long time.
Since I work in the recruitment department myself, my work has been affected since September, when the company basically cancelled all the positions I recruited. My team knows what this means, but I think we're just waiting to see how long this will last.
Prepare for layoffs a few weeks in advance
A few weeks ago, I heard through the grapevine that layoffs would begin on Wednesday. However, at that time, such conversations were still limited to senior levels, but I knew my colleague in the human resources department and he heard a lot of discussions. I still hope I won't be affected, because the company obviously can't fire everyone. But it did give me a few weeks to prepare for the worst, including rewriting my resume, just in case.
Every Thursday, we have a plenary meeting with Zuckerberg, and he is very frank. Recently, Zuckerberg has been talking about cost-cutting measures. We are told that in terms of recruitment, we will pay more attention to mission, and we will be more cautious in terms of growth, construction and staffing. And many teams may be bigger than they used to be.
Zuckerberg said three months ago that layoffs were a last resort. I really believed then (and still do) that he did his best to avoid layoffs, but in the end he had no choice but to do so.
A different feeling of layoffs than in the past
On Wednesday morning, Zuckerberg announced the layoffs in a memo on our internal employee page, and I also received an email. I think the length of time has a lot to do with who can stay, because those who stay on my team have been working in the company for more than two years.
At the same time, everyone on my team has exceeded their goals, so for anyone on our team, who is left behind is not entirely based on normal performance, which is why I want everyone to stay. However, this obviously seems unlikely.
Say goodbye to each other in advance, just in case
Before layoffs, I worked remotely, but sometimes I went to my office in New York. I didn't go back yesterday, but my friends did go in. They said the atmosphere there was really strange. Everyone feels like it's their last day working there, which is very frustrating.
On Tuesday, everyone on the hiring team was given an Excel form and asked to add their names to it in order to keep in touch, which could help future jobs. It's really good to have such support. A lot of people have contacted me. Obviously, people are stepping up efforts to weave their networks.
It's not a good feeling for everyone: we used to be a very close team, but suddenly we seemed to fall apart.
I've been fired before. At that time, I didn't seem to have much emotion. I feel that in a sense there is no respect for the community and no empathy.
But at Meta, I think Zuckerberg handled it very carefully and perfectly, full of human feelings, and everyone was respected. Zuckerberg has been honest that he messed things up, and I respect those who dare to take responsibility.
At another company where I worked, a vice president of human resources and a director I didn't even know had an one-on-one meeting with me about dismissal, but I was still annoyed. In fact, I prefer email notification, and I appreciate its efficiency and transparency.
The company has done its best to get things done.
Some people in my network have contacted me and asked me to send my resume to them, and I have got several interviews for this. It's a good lesson to always show yourself so that when something like this happens, people will want to help you. The communities around me are great and I am very grateful to them.
We get a lot of severance pay from Meta, and they allow laid-off employees three months to get career support, such as providing resume assistance, contacting job search committees and training courses. They really want to make sure everyone is supported, which is good. I know we will keep in touch, just like friends for life.
My advice to technology companies: stop over-hiring
It's sad to lose your job. After all, it's a very flexible job with a high salary and good benefits. I am quite satisfied with being able to work at Meta and agree with the corporate culture here. The company is obviously built around helping people stay in touch, but internally, it is also good at keeping employees in touch. Every system we use is carefully planned and built by ourselves.
The only frustrating thing is layoffs. I have been engaged in recruitment for seven years, and in the past two years, many of my friends have been affected. I just hope that enterprises will stop excessive recruitment and try their best to take good care of every employee.
As a recruiter, I feel like I'm being used. I was hired during a period of rapid growth, and once we stopped hiring, you were fired. It's sad because it makes me really afraid of hiring again.
We have recruited a lot of outstanding people, but if things don't go well, they will be fired, which is emotionally unacceptable. I hope I can be valued, just as I value the company.
