CTOnews.com, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk (Elon Musk) completed a $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, followed by a series of major changes, such as firing a large number of executives and employees and making changes to the product plan.

Recently, it was found that Musk's adjustments to Twitter bypassed the standard data governance process, and Twitter's most senior web security executive, Lea Kissner, and other key privacy and compliance staff left on Thursday, which will lead to confusion among Twitter's privacy and security team.

The move could violate the company's privacy settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). FTC could impose billions of dollars in fines if Twitter does not abide by the agreement, according to a memo sent to employees by lawyers from Twitter's privacy team.

In this regard, FTC expressed "deep concern" and will investigate Twitter's internal data processing practices. "No CEO or company is above the law," says FTC.

CTOnews.com learned that in its FTC oversight role, they investigate complaints from consumers, companies and anyone with integrity about misleading advertising, violations of privacy promises, illegal business arrangements, and so on.

In 2011, Twitter agreed to reach a settlement with FTC after it was found to be "abusing user data". In a survey earlier this year, it was found to have done so again over the years and was fined $150 million, so this is not groundless.

According to reports, the settlement requires Twitter to establish a plan to ensure and maintain a periodic report on its new features that will not further distort "the security, privacy, confidentiality or integrity of its maintenance and protection of any non-public consumer information."

In May, Twitter was accused of fraudulently using account security data for targeted advertising and paid a $150 million (1 billion yuan) fine.

It's worth mentioning that despite FTC's harsh words, Musk's personal lawyer and current Twitter legal director, Alex Spiro, said Musk was not afraid of regulation at all:

Musk is willing to take huge risks for Twitter and its users, because "Musk sent the rocket into space, he is not afraid of FTC." Musk's new legal department now requires engineers to "self-prove" compliance with FTC rules and other privacy laws, according to the lawyer's memo and another employee familiar with the matter.
