Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, November 10 (Xinhua)-- according to information released by the Gates Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation recently announced a commitment of $1.4 billion (about 10.15 billion yuan) to help small farmers cope with the short-term and long-term impacts of climate change, in response to calls by African leaders for countries to rapidly increase financing for climate adaptation.
Gates Foundation CEO Mark Sussman (Mark Suzman) made the announcement at the 27th Conference of the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate change (COP27).
The Gates Foundation's commitment will fund a series of short-and long-term initiatives over the next four years to help small farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia build climate resilience and maintain food security. Funding will focus on stimulating African-led innovative projects, including building a number of climate smart agricultural projects, developing new applications of digital technologies, supporting climate smart innovation for smallholder animal husbandry and supporting female smallholder farmers to reach their full potential.
CTOnews.com learned that Bill Gates said: "the climate crisis continues to wreak havoc, threatening people's lives and economies in different regions. We should invest more money to ensure that agricultural and technological innovation can widely benefit vulnerable people and help them adapt to climate change, save lives and boost economic growth."
The Gates Foundation announced a commitment to support other projects, including:
The Africa adaptation Program (AAI) aims to rapidly establish a number of climate smart agricultural projects in 23 African countries. The funds will provide targeted support for the technical capabilities, planning and project development required for project implementation.
Develop new applications of digital technology to ensure that small farmers can anticipate and respond to climate threats. The project includes the development of an innovative smart weather platform through a new partnership between the Kenya Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Research Organization (KALRO) and TomorrowNow to provide climate smart agricultural strategies to farmers in East Africa in the form of text messages.
African-led climate smart innovative programmes to improve livestock health and animal husbandry productivity while reducing carbon emissions. The project will be carried out jointly with the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
