CTOnews.com, November 10, according to the official of China Telecom Macau, China Telecom (Macau) was officially granted a 5G public terrestrial mobile telecommunications network and service license (5G license) by the Macao SAR government on November 07, 2022, and is expected to provide 5G services to local customers in Macau within 2022.

CTOnews.com learned that the Macao Special Administrative region Gazette issued an order from the Chief Executive on November 7, approving Macau Telecom Limited and China Telecom (Macau) Limited respectively to establish and operate a public terrestrial mobile telecommunications network using fifth-generation (5G) technology and to provide related public terrestrial mobile telecommunications services, with a licence valid for eight years.

According to the instructions, within 12 months from the date of issuance of the licence, the two companies are required to build a 5G network system that can cover half of Macao and provide commercial services, and within the next 18 months, expand the 5G network to cover the entire territory of Macao.

In addition, 5G Android phones will be the first mobile phone systems to support the use of 5G in Macau, and are now on trial; while for Apple phones, Macau is now starting the network connection work, and it is expected that the test will be completed in the first quarter of 2023 and the iOS system will be updated to fully support Macau 5G services.
