CTOnews.com, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) Microsoft's GitHub is testing a new voice-based interactive system for its Copilot software, "Hey, GitHub!" Programmers will be allowed to write code using only sound rather than keyboards.

CTOnews.com learned that the experimental feature will be tested in Copilot, a $10-a-month artificial intelligence tool launched by GitHub earlier this year to help developers write code. Copilot recommends lines of code to developers in their code editor, and when developers enter code in integrated development environments (IDE) such as Visual Studio Code, Neovim, and JetBrains IDEs, Copilot can recommend the next line of code.

"with the power of your voice, we are pleased that it is possible to bring the benefits of GitHub Copilot to more developers, including those who have difficulty typing by hand," GitHub explained in a blog post today. "Hey, GitHub Copilot has only reduced the need for keyboards when coding in VS Code, but we hope to expand its functionality through further research and testing."

This feature will be particularly helpful for accessibility scenarios, with which programmers can command Copilot to move to different lines of code, or navigate to methods or blocks using only sound. You can even control Visual Studio Code, using commands such as "run the program" or "switch meditation mode". The new voice system was developed by GitHub Next, a team of researchers and engineers to "study the future of software development", but there is no guarantee that the feature will eventually be launched as a complete product.
