CTOnews.com, Nov. 9 (Xinhua)-- according to the Wall Street Journal, people familiar with the matter said that chipmaker TSMC is preparing to invest billions more to build a plant in Arizona.

TSMC plans to announce in the coming months that it will build a state-of-the-art semiconductor plant north of Phoenix, Arizona, next to another chip plant it announced in 2020, according to people familiar with the matter. People familiar with the matter said the investment is expected to be roughly the same as the $12 billion (about 86.88 billion yuan) promised two years ago.

CTOnews.com learned that in May 2020, TSMC announced that it would invest $12 billion to build a new fab in Arizona. Construction of the plant began in June 2021 and is expected to start production in 2024.

According to previous reports, when the Arizona plant announced by TSMC in 2020 is completed, it is expected to use the 5nm process to fabricate wafers for relevant customers, with a monthly production capacity of 20000 wafers, including Nvidia, Qualcomm and Apple.
