CTOnews.com This week, the French Senate passed new legislation requiring all parking lots with at least 80 parking spaces, whether existing or new, to be equipped with solar panels.

The new regulation is part of France's massive plan to invest heavily in renewable energy, which aims to increase the country's solar power generation tenfold and double the amount of electricity generated by onshore wind farms.

Starting July 1, 2023, small parking lots with 80 to 400 parking spaces will have five years to reach the new rules, parking lots with more than 400 parking spaces will need to be reached within three years, and at least half of the parking area will be covered with solar panels.

The plan specifically targets large parking lots around commercial centers and train stations that could generate up to 11GW of electricity, the equivalent of 10 nuclear reactors powering millions of homes. Under an amendment to the Act, France has introduced provisions that exclude parking lots for trucks carrying heavy goods or parking lots in historic, protected areas.

CTOnews.com understands that SNCF, the French national railway service, also plans to install about 190,000 square meters of solar panels at 156 stations nationwide by 2025 and 1.1 million square meters by 2030, with the ultimate goal of reducing energy consumption by 25%.
