According to the news on November 9, following Gartner's analysis of the top ten strategic technology trends in 2023, Ji Xinsu, vice president of Gartner research, recently analyzed six trends affecting enterprise infrastructure and operations in the year after next.

Ji Xinsu said that the six major trends of "secure access service edge, wireless technology value innovation, sustainable IT technology, industry cloud platform, platform engineering, and skills gap widening" will affect enterprise infrastructure and operations next year or the year after.

Secure access Service Edge (SASE) enterprises have found in the process of "cloud" transformation that the original way of security management based on physical boundaries and data centers is no longer applicable, and more and more enterprises will access public clouds and edge computing. Ji Xinsu stressed that enterprises are facing two major challenges: how to connect applications securely and how to improve network performance. Based on this, SASE capability has been paid more attention.

SASE is an overall solution, a framework of software and hardware tools that ensures secure access to cloud and network resources for applications, services, users, and machines typically provided in the form of cloud services. SASE is not a stand-alone system, but contains a set of technologies, from SD-WAN and cloud access security agents (CASB) to secure web gateways, zero-trust network access (ZTNA), firewall as a service (FWaaS), and differential segments.

With increasing cloud and external traffic from remote access and software as a service (SaaS), SASE has shifted its focus from a central private data center to the network periphery and cloud, while security controls are focused on the edge of the network.

Sustainable technology with China's "double carbon" goal put forward, more and more enterprises have the demand for carbon reduction. Organizations need a new sustainable technology framework to improve the energy and material efficiency of IT services, achieve corporate sustainability through technologies such as traceability, analysis, renewable energy and artificial intelligence (AI), and deploy IT solutions that help customers achieve their sustainability goals.

Ji Xinsu pointed out that achieving the "carbon peak" is not only the use of clean energy, the most important thing is to improve the efficiency of the use of existing resources. From the perspective of the data center, it is necessary to understand and clarify the business demands of enterprises for sustainable development in the next 2-3 years, and optimize some indicators as the goals of the data center.

Ji Xinsu, a platform project, said that "platform engineering" is not a new concept. "platform engineering" and "agile, micro-services, CI / CD, DevOps, containers" are an ecosystem.

Platform engineering is a set of mechanisms and architectures for building and operating a self-service internal developer platform that supports software delivery and lifecycle management. The goal of platform engineering is to optimize the developer experience so that developers and business users can easily operate and use it.

"the biggest advantage of platform engineering is that development departments do not have to rebuild the wheels and present some complex technologies as an API way. Including API gateways, service discovery, load balancing, etc., these are the capabilities that every service team needs. It can be implemented as a public service in the way of platform engineering, without the need for each service team to rebuild." Ji Xinsu said.

Gartner predicts that by 2026, 80 per cent of software engineering organizations will have platform teams, 75 per cent of which will include developer self-service portals.

Wireless technology value innovation since no technology can dominate, enterprises will use a range of wireless solutions to meet the needs of all scenarios such as office Wi-Fi, mobile device services, low power services, and radio connections. Gartner predicts that 60% of enterprises will use more than five wireless technologies at the same time by 2025.

Ji Xinsu believes: "Enterprises need to consider the arrangement and combination of the values of various wireless technologies to address the barriers between network practice and business value. There may be more than one network support in some scenarios."

This means that the functions of networks will no longer be limited to pure connections, they will use built-in analysis capabilities to provide insights, and their low-power systems will derive energy directly from the network. This means that the network will directly generate business value.

Industry cloud platform "the traditional enterprise cloud category will evolve into a packaged industry cloud platform," Ji Xinsu said. industry cloud platforms provide industry modularity capabilities to support industry application scenarios by combining SaaS, platform as a service (PaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS). Enterprises can use the packaging function of the industry cloud platform as the basic module to combine into unique and differentiated digital business projects to improve agility, promote innovation and shorten time-to-market while avoiding single vendor lock-in.

Gartner predicts that by 2027, more than 50% of enterprises will use industry cloud platforms to accelerate their business projects.

However, Ji Xinsu also stressed: "Industry cloud is not sustainable if it does not make money. Chinese industry cloud enterprises started relatively early, but there has not been a particularly successful or large case. It will take time for the industry cloud to balance the customized demands of enterprises and satisfy its users."

Ji Xinsu said that with the continuous development of digital business, some new technologies, such as "cloud native", pose great challenges to traditional technologies. The demand for ITIL, IT, and IO is far less than some capabilities such as "cloud, automation, and AI algorithm analysis".

Currently, active data center staff prefer hardware management or traditional ITIL management, and it may take a year or two to prepare to transform the data center into a capability compatible with traditional data centers and new cloud platforms.

The gap of this kind of skilled personnel, it is very difficult for enterprises to achieve no shortage with training in a short time, and they need to use some external resources. It is suggested that enterprises should build a relatively tolerant corporate culture and retain talents continuously.
