CTOnews.com November 9 news, after Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk joined Twitter last week, the social networking giant began to lay off staff. According to three notices sent to regional authorities by CNBC, the layoffs affected a total of 983 employees in California, where it is located.
"with regard to Twitter layoffs, unfortunately, when the company loses more than $4 million a day, there is no choice," Musk, the new owner, chief executive and sole director of Twitter, wrote in a Twitter post on Friday. "everyone who leaves gets three months' severance pay, which is 50 per cent more than required by law."
CTOnews.com learned that in the event of mass layoffs or factory closures in California, the Federal worker Adjustment and retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires employers to give advance notice, usually within 60 days.
According to a letter from Twitter, which is part of California's Employment Development Division, Twitter notified the affected employees on November 4. Many of these employees described the loss of access to email and other Twitter internal systems overnight on November 3 in public posts on social media.
According to WARN's notice, permanent dismissal is expected to begin in January 2023. In three separate WARN notification letters in California signed by Twitter Human Resources, the company wrote: "affected employees will be paid all salaries and other benefits, and they will be entitled to these benefits before the termination date."
Specific layoffs include 784 in San Francisco, 106 in San Jose and 93 in Santa Monica, according to WARN.
As of June 30, 2013, shortly before Twitter went public, the company had about 2000 employees, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). By the end of last year, the company had more than 7500 full-time employees. According to a number of media reports, Twitter's massive layoffs will cut 50% of jobs worldwide.
