On Tuesday, local time, enterprise software developer Salesforce confirmed that layoffs began this week. The company laid off hundreds of employees on Monday, according to people familiar with the matter.

It is reported that Salesforce had previously found a reduction in demand for its business in some markets. There were earlier reports that Salesforce's current round of layoffs could affect as many as 2500 employees. As of the end of January this year, Salesforce had 73541 employees. In August, Salesforce said in a document that the number of employees increased by 36 per cent last year "to meet higher customer demand for the company's services".

"our employees have a responsibility to complete sales according to the process," Salesforce said. "Unfortunately, this may cause some people to leave the company, and we support them to complete the transition."

Several technology companies, including Salesforce, have announced plans to slow hiring this year in response to a difficult business environment of inflation and rising interest rates, many of which have announced layoffs.

In August, Salesforce released a full-year profit and revenue outlook that fell below analysts' expectations, causing the share price to fall 3 per cent the next day. Amy Weaver, Salesforce's chief financial officer, told analysts that demand from small and medium-sized businesses in the communications, consumer goods, media and retail sectors was slowing, particularly in North America and Europe. Marc Benioff, co-founder and co-chief executive of Salesforce, said he expected longer sales cycles and increased scrutiny of corporate acquisitions. Microsoft, one of Salesforce's biggest competitors in enterprise software, announced a new round of layoffs in October.
