Beijing, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) Twitter laid off more than 90 percent of its Indian employees over the weekend as part of Elon Musk's global layoffs, severely weakening the company's engineering and product workforce in this potential growth market.

Note: Twitter has slightly more than 200 employees in India and only about 12 remain after the layoffs, according to people familiar with the layoffs. About 70% of the layoffs come from product and engineering teams that carry out global tasks. At the same time, jobs in sectors such as marketing, public policy and corporate communications have been slashed. Twitter has cut its workforce by half globally, to about 3700.

India is a key growth engine for global Internet companies such as Twitter, Facebook parent Meta and Google, all of which are looking to gain access to India's vast hidden online user base. However, these companies also face increasingly stringent content regulation aimed at controlling large technology companies in India.

Twitter has not commented.
