CTOnews.com, Nov. 7, according to TheElec, Samsung Systems LSI, Samsung's logic chip design business, has been registered as a second-tier supplier of CMOS image sensors (CIS) for Hyundai's latest models.

According to sources, the main supplier of the model launched in the first half of this year is Omnivision (Howie Technology).

Samsung system LSI is a secondary supplier, and its CIS is supplied to Hyundai Mobis, which makes a complete camera module and supplies it to Hyundai cars, they added.

Over the past decade, the CIS market has grown with the support of smartphones, but more cars are using them.

As more autopilot functions are used in future cars, more sensor units are expected to be used in future cars. As the eyes of the car, these sensors provide image data for the car.

CTOnews.com learned that CIS for cars is usually more expensive than CIS for other products because they need to be more durable.

According to Yole Development, the global automotive CIS market is worth $4.4 billion in 2018, but will reach $8.7 billion in 2024.

The global automotive CIS market is dominated by ONSemiconductor (on Semiconductor) and Omnivision. Sony and Samsung are strong players in smartphone CIS, but they are considered to be the second echelon of top manufacturers in automobiles.

Car companies have also been slow to replace suppliers of these parts because of stricter safety requirements. But growth in this area gives Sony and Samsung a chance to secure a larger share.

The company has been demonstrating results since Haechang Lee, executive vice president of Samsung's automotive sensor team at LSI, joined the company two years ago, the source said.

Haechang Lee previously worked at Google for six years as head of the company's sensor team.

Samsung's technology in automotive sensors has jumped dramatically since the executive vice president joined Samsung, the source said. Park Yong-in, director of Samsung Systems LSI, has done a lot of work to hire Haechang Lee.
