CTOnews.com, November 7, Beijing Automobile Group Co., Ltd. (BAIC) recently announced that BAIC's first hydrogen internal combustion engine has been successfully ignited, taking a key step towards achieving a high-efficiency zero-carbon engine.

According to reports, BAIC Research Institute and Beijing University of Technology have set up a joint working group to complete the simulation analysis, design and development of key systems of hydrogen internal combustion engines. After the first hydrogen internal combustion engine was trial-produced and assembled in BAIC, the two teams jointly carried out combustion development in the laboratory of Beijing University of Technology.

The hydrogen internal combustion engine is based on the further optimization of Magic Nucleus 1.5T engine, which won the "China Heart" Top Ten engine Award in 2021. It mainly adopts some key technologies, such as nozzles and guides for hydrogen fuel, hydrogen turbocharger, hydrogen special oil, wear-resistant and hydrogen-resistant valves and valve seats. On the basis of the excellent performance of the magic core engine, the thermal efficiency target is 45%.

The 1.5T engine of the magic nuclear power platform was released in 2021, equipped with VGT turbocharger technology, with maximum power of 138kW, maximum torque of 305N.m and idle noise of only 57.5dB.

CTOnews.com learned that the successful ignition of the first hydrogen internal combustion engine was an important achievement after BAIC released the "BLUE Weilan Plan" in June this year. According to the plan, BAIC will strive to achieve carbon peak in 2025, complete decarbonization of products and carbon neutralization in operation by 2050.

After the injection of steam and hydrogen internal combustion engine, it will be carried out in the commercial vehicle with fixed line use scene in BAIC, and the product will also be carried in the hybrid passenger vehicle developed by the group.
