Microsoft is bringing to Linux the ability to run nested hypervisors (Hyper-V) or nested virtualization. Jinank Jain, a senior engineer at Microsoft Linux, recently released a series of patches for this feature.

This series of patches plan to add support for running nested Microsoft Hypervisor. In the case of nesting Microsoft Hypervisor, there are some privileged hypercalls that need to take L0 Hypervisor instead of L1 Hypervisor. This series of patches can basically identify such overcalls and replace them with nested overcalls.

Mshv: added support for detecting nested hypervisor

Hv: setting synic registers with nested root partitions

Hv: add interfaces to make nested overcalls

Hv: enable vmbus drivers for nested root partitions

Hv, mshv: change the interrupt vector of the nested root partition

Nested virtualization allows users to run virtual machines (VM) within another Hyper-V virtual machine. So, if this patch can be successfully merged soon, such as in Linux kernel version 6.2, users will soon be able to run multiple Windows instances in Linux.

Nested virtualization is usually designed for enterprises, and Microsoft must have taken these factors into account when adding this feature. It's also an interesting experience for the average user.

CTOnews.com learned that nested virtualization is a Hyper-v hypervisor that simulates hardware virtualization extensions. These emulation extensions can be used by other virtualization software (for example, nested hypervisors) to run on the Hyper-v platform. This feature applies only to guest zones. This feature must be enabled per virtual machine. The Windows root partition does not support nested virtualization.

Hypervisors can significantly improve performance when running in a virtual machine compared to bare metal. The L1 hypervisor can be optimized to run in Hyper-v VM by using the enabled interface provided by the L0 hypervisor.
