Compared with the strong memory chip business, South Korea is obviously weaker in non-memory chips. Although Samsung Electronics has good strength in chip foundry, its process technology can basically keep up with the rhythm of TSMC, and the 3nm process technology is the first in mass production, but the design and research and development of non-memory chips are the shortcomings of Korean manufacturers.

The latest reports from South Korean media show that in the report released by the Korea Industrial Research Institute, non-memory chips are far less competitive globally than memory chips.

In the report of Korea Industrial Research Institute, the overall competitiveness score of Korean semiconductor industry is 71 (score is 0-100), and the score of memory chip is as high as 87, but non-memory chip is only 63, which is the lowest among the six sub-sectors.

The Korea Industrial Research Institute also said in the report that South Korea and the industry need to focus more on the design and development of non-memory chips.

It is worth noting that in terms of non-memory chips, it has been previously reported that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix can directly compensate for the weaknesses of the Korean semiconductor industry and enhance design strength if they acquire Arm. However, industry insiders also believe Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are unlikely to acquire Arm as Nvidia's acquisition of Arm ended due to regulatory challenges.
