CTOnews.com, Nov. 4, the latest Canalys data show that the global personal computer (including tablet) market fell for five consecutive quarters in the third quarter of 2022, with total shipments falling to 105.6 million units, down 14% from the same period a year earlier and up only 1% from the second quarter of 2022 (supply was severely disrupted in the second quarter of 2022 due to various restrictions). Demand in all product categories and end-user areas has been suppressed by the deterioration of macroeconomic conditions, and consumers and businesses have taken a more cautious approach to spending on equipment. Tablet shipments fell 6 per cent to 35.3 million in the third quarter, while Chromebook shipments fell 29 per cent to 4.2 million, the lowest since 2019.

The tablet market continued to decline in the third quarter, after falling 11% in the previous quarter. CTOnews.com learned that Apple was the market leader, but iPad shipments fell 12 per cent year-on-year to 13.4 million. Samsung ranked second, with shipments of 6.6 million units in the third quarter, a relatively modest decline of 8 per cent. Amazon ranked third, with shipments up 18 per cent to 3.2 million units, thanks to a heavily discounted promotion of its Fire tablet on Prime Day. Lenovo and Huawei ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, with big declines of 37% and 41%, respectively.

Himani Mukka, an analyst at Canalys, said: "in the post-epidemic era, the macroeconomic environment is severe, resulting in increased pressure on consumer spending and increased weak demand for tablets. With the basic recovery of offline education, people spend less time indoors and equipment, while spending on updating or upgrading tablets is falling sharply because of limited household budgets. However, promotions by manufacturers and retailers, including back-to-school discounts, as well as increasing commercial deployments, have helped to keep shipments at higher levels than before the outbreak. Although the tablet market is unlikely to reach the highs of 2020 and 2021 again, its trajectory is more positive than expected a few years ago, and manufacturers say they will continue to focus on the tablet category. Fresh blood is pouring into the sector, especially in the mid-and low-end Android market in Asia, which will provide growth opportunities in all end-user areas over the next few years. For example, India's medical and automotive industries, as a vertical industry, are increasing the deployment of tablets for commercial use. At the same time, the industry giant Apple has a portfolio of tablet products for different prices and usage scenarios, and has introduced its most powerful innovative technology, the M2 chipset, to iPad Pro. "

Brian Lynch, a research analyst at Canalys, said: "the saturation of demand for education put further pressure on the Chromebook market in the third quarter. Since the education market first showed signs of saturation in the third quarter of 2021, manufacturers have been trying to find growth opportunities in other areas while reining in high-water inventories. Demand for Chromebook was expected to decline in the second half of 2021, but the decline intensified as consumer and business demand growth was curbed by the recession and limited spending on education. At present, high inventory and low demand have eroded some manufacturers' enthusiasm for Chromebook. Windows-based educational PCs have attracted more interest from manufacturers because they provide alternative sales opportunities in the face of unstable future educational demand. However, global education needs are still strongly skewed towards Chromebook because they account for the majority of the user base and are the first choice for IT administrators of the entire American education system. The coming peak in demand for education will continue to make Chromebook more beneficial than competitors' devices.

Acer achieved the greatest success in the saturated market, winning the first place with shipments of more than 1 million units in the third quarter, achieving an 11% growth, accounting for more than 1/4 of total shipments. After suffering more severe declines than other manufacturers in recent quarters, Hewlett-Packard firmly ranked second in Chromebook, with shipments falling 27% to 800000. Of all the head manufacturers, Lenovo experienced the biggest decline, down 50%, as it struggled with high-water inventory and shifted its education portfolio to include more Windows devices. Dell paid less attention to the Chromebook market throughout the outbreak, with shipments falling slightly by 11%. Asustek occupies the fifth position with a market share of 9.6%.

In the entire PC market (desktops, laptops and tablets), Apple tops the list with global shipments of 23.4 million units. As the only leader to achieve year-on-year growth in the third quarter, it grabbed 22% of the market share. Lenovo ranked second with 19.4 million units shipped and a market share of 18%, down 21% from a year earlier. Hewlett-Packard ranked third, with shipments falling 28 per cent to 12.7 million units, a two-point drop in market share compared with the third quarter of 2021. Dell, in fourth place, shipped 12 million units, down 21%, while Samsung, in fifth place, shipped 7.3 million units, a smaller drop of 13%.
