CTOnews.com, Nov. 4 (Xinhua)-- Twitter has been sued because Elon Musk plans to cut about 3700 jobs, half of its workforce, on the social media platform, Bloomberg reported. Employees said the company violated federal and California laws by laying off staff without sufficient notice, and they filed a class action lawsuit against Twitter in federal court in San Francisco on Thursday.

In an email to employees, Twitter plans to start laying off staff on Friday, local time. Mr. Musk wants to cut the cost of Twitter, which he bought last month for $44 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.

CTOnews.com learned that the Federal worker Adjustment and retraining Notification Act restricts large companies from making large layoffs without at least 60 days' notice. The class action requires the court to issue an order requiring Twitter to comply with the bill and restricting the company from requiring employees to sign documents that may waive their right to participate in the lawsuit.

"We are filing this lawsuit tonight to ensure that employees realize that they should not give up their rights and that they have a channel to pursue their rights," Shannon Liss-Riordan, the lawyer who filed the complaint on Thursday, said in an interview.

Twitter did not respond to requests for comment.

In June, Tesla, led by Mr Musk, laid off about 10 per cent of his workforce, and Liss-Riordan sued Tesla over similar claims.
