CTOnews.com, November 4, OpenAI launched an open beta version of API, making its image generation software DALL-E more widely available to enterprises. The API will make it easier for companies to add DALL-E 's text-to-image capabilities to their products, providing developers with simplified tools to integrate and customize the software to their preferences.

One of the early use cases of this API is Microsoft's Designer application, which uses DALL-E to generate images for Office users. Microsoft is one of the major investors in OpenAI and released the app last month.

Luke Miller, product manager for API at OpenAI, said: "We already have some customers who develop on this basis in very interesting ways. Some are creative explorations, some are more business-oriented. A startup called Mixtiles is using the API to generate posters and works of art for home decoration, and another company called CALA is using it to help customers design their own clothes."

In the past year, people's interest in and adoption of text-to-image artificial intelligence has exploded. Although OpenAI was once a leader in this field, it is now challenged by newcomers such as Midjourney and Stability AI, and they have fewer restrictions on users, allowing users to build their own AI systems without supervision. At the same time, other players in the field, such as Google and Meta, have taken a more cautious approach: developing systems with similar capabilities, but limiting their public use to very limited scenarios.

Although text-to-image artificial intelligence can provide obvious creative benefits, it also has many problems. The software can be used to generate misinformation and harmful images, and there are challenging moral problems in the use of data.

Text-to-image artificial intelligence systems like DALL-E are trained based on images collected from the Internet, which usually include the copyrighted works of photographers, artists and designers. Many artists are outraged that the resulting technology can not only be used to imitate their personal style, but they are not compensated for using their work to generate revenue for multibillion-dollar companies such as OpenAI.

CTOnews.com has learned that some companies that develop text-to-image applications are starting to offer compensation. For example, Shutterstock, which authorizes data from its contributors to OpenAI to create DALL-E and uses its API to generate custom inventory images, recently announced that it is setting up a contributor fund to compensate individuals whose work is used to train AI.

When asked if OpenAI plans to make any similar plans to compensate artists, Miller said there is nothing specific to share and will continue to seek feedback from the community, adding that this is a very complex issue that needs to be considered from many different perspectives.

For OpenAI, this question is really difficult to answer because the company has never shared the training data used to create DALL-E. Legal experts say that in the United States, training artificial intelligence models by scraping public images, even copyrighted ones, may be covered by the principle of fair use. However, many artists point out that adequate legal protection is not equal to moral recognition.

OpenAI said that access to DALL-E API will initially be rate-limited and will not be reviewed in terms of how customers use the technology. Customers will be charged for the number of images generated and will be able to choose between three resolution levels: $0.016 for 256x256 images, $0.018 for 512x512 images and $0.02for 1024 x 1024 images. (about 0.146 yuan).
