CTOnews.com, November 3, according to Nokia Bell, in October this year, Nokia Bell completed laboratory and outfield verification of key technologies of 3GPP R17 RedCap under the guidance of IMT-2020 (5G) propulsion team.

This test follows the specification requirements of "NR RedCap key Technology Test method for 5G Enhancement Technology Research and Development Test" and "NR RedCap outfield performance Test method for 5G Enhancement Technology Research and Development Test" compiled by IMT-2020 (5G) Propulsion Group. The required functional items pass 100%. The test results show that the network has key functions such as RedCap UE residence and access control, identification and random access, basic service related functions, mobility, coexistence with Legacy UE, etc. The key indicators such as peak user throughput, multi-point access and throughput, and user-side delay are in line with expectations, laying the foundation for the commercial use of 5G RedCap in the future.

CTOnews.com has learned that RedCap devices are designed for use cases that exceed the capabilities of large-scale Internet of things technologies such as LTE-M and NB-IoT, which means they can support high data rates and low latency, and some representative use cases include:

Video transmission for traffic surveillance and security cameras

Wearable devices such as smartwatches, goggles, smart glasses, health sensors and medical devices

Industrial wireless sensors for temperature, pressure, proximity, smoke, liquid level and vibration

Networked automotive applications such as infotainment, telematics, real-time high-definition maps and software upgrades

Drones for command and control and video transmission

The introduction of RedCap devices will help expand Internet of things opportunities for operators, such as:

Leverage existing networks to expand the Internet of things market for 5G NR by providing low-cost devices and enabling network software updates

Support the re-ploughing of LTE spectrum to NR by providing cost-effective device solutions for IoT service migration

Provide NR-based Internet of things solutions to complement URLLC components in Industrial 4.0 for better integration and network efficiency.

Nokia Bell said it will continue to actively participate in the research and verification of the follow-up 5G RedCap enhancement technology of the IMT-2020 (5G) promotion group.
