Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Nov. 3 (Xinhua)-- Samsung will mainly use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 application processor on its upcoming Galaxy S23 series smartphones, according to TheElec.
Sources say Samsung's own Exynos platform is likely to be mainly for mid-range smartphones rather than flagship models in the future.
Samsung has tried to expand its market share by using Exynos platforms made of 5nm and 4nm, but sources say that so far, the production of the 4nm version is very low, and its performance and heating problems are not up to standard. For this reason, Samsung Systems LSI, the company's chip design division, is planning to use 5-nanometer nodes to produce its next-generation Exynos series, possibly named Exynos 2300, the source added.
However, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 processor is already being manufactured using TSMC's 4nm nodes, which means its overall performance will be better than the 5nm Exynos 2300. For this reason, Samsung MX was forced to choose Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 as the main processor of the S23 series, the source said.
It is worth mentioning that Samsung's Exynos version of the Galaxy S22 had the infamous Game Optimization Service (GOS) problem, and Samsung was found to deliberately limit the performance of the processor to avoid overheating and other problems.
Another group of sources told TheElec that Samsung may invest very little in the development of 4-nanometer nodes because it is considered to be a bridge between 5 and 3 nanometers. But they added that customers' acceptance and demand for 4nm was higher than expected.
Samsung chip owner Kyung Kye-hyun admitted in September that the company lagged behind rival TSMC in terms of progress and production of 5nm and 4nm nodes.
CTOnews.com learned that Samsung system LSI has recently reorganized a number of teams, and the SoC development team is responsible for the development of SoC by the AP development team and the communication processor development team or CP development team. The AP development team develops computing and artificial intelligence chips, while the CP development team develops IP related to communications. The CP team was separated from the AP development team because Samsung wanted to improve its expertise in modem-related technology. At the same time, Samsung Foundry, Samsung's contract chip production division, is also expected to make some overhauls. The unit went through a business review by Samsung's leadership earlier this year for the first time since 2017.
It is worth mentioning that Qualcomm's next-generation flagship 5G chip SM8550 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2) is likely to be the only processor supplier to Samsung's Galaxy S23 (S22 shipments account for 70 per cent), thanks to the use of TSMC's 4nm, analyst Guo Mingyi said in July.
