CTOnews.com, Nov. 3, Microsoft PowerToys for Windows 11 and Windows 10 has been updated to the latest version 0.64.0, and a new feature called "File locksmith File Locksmith" has been launched. So what exactly is the use of this feature?

Technically, it is an Windows shell extension that allows users to check which files are being used by which processes.

Although most security housekeepers have similar features, Microsoft has not been able to natively provide a solution on Windows to find specific processes that take up the file. Although you can delete / close the current process through the Task Manager, it does not tell you exactly what is taking up your files so that you cannot delete them.

CTOnews.com learned that "current file is in use" is a feature built into File Explorer and can be used by default to reduce application crashes, but it can be annoying when you want to delete a file from the system and find it occupied.

Therefore, using File Locksmith in PowerToys, you can quickly find out all the running processes and find out who is using the file you want to delete.

It is worth mentioning that the PowerToys File Locksmith function can also be quickly opened by integrating into the right-click menu. You can select any file or folder and right-click it to find out exactly which processes are using the file, as shown in the following figure:

Once the process you are looking for is detected, you can also choose to terminate the process by terminating these tasks directly, or click the process to learn more about the application. Of course, you can also manually refresh the list of processes by clicking the "Reload" icon.

This feature is still being tested at PowerToys and all users can try to download it from GitHub. For now, it is highly unlikely that this feature will be integrated into Windows 11, at least in the near future.
