CTOnews.com, Nov. 2 (Reuters)-Microsoft CEO Brad Brad Smith has warned that thousands of companies will not be able to meet their climate change commitments unless they start training their employees on sustainability.

Smith said on Wednesday that common guidance on issues such as carbon emissions accounting was too fragmented for about 3900 companies that had vowed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. "We have to act quickly and start to reduce our emissions," he said. "and the ultimate bottleneck is the supply of technical personnel."

Microsoft sells software to businesses to track their environmental impact. Still, Smith said companies need more than just technology to solve global warming, and announced plans to develop green educational materials.

CTOnews.com learned that a study conducted on Wednesday by Microsoft and BCG found that 68 per cent of corporate environmental leaders were recruited internally and that their team members often lacked degrees related to sustainability. The findings come from interviews and surveys with Microsoft and eight other large companies in areas such as finance and consumer goods.

For example, a Microsoft employee worked at the company for more than 30 years and was promoted to head of the sustainability team after customer support, procurement and other roles.

While Microsoft itself has increased the number of employees working on sustainability from about 30 to about 250 in the past three years, having the right workforce to meet its carbon reduction goals remains a challenge, Smith said. He said the company should bring in teachers, pay for continuing education and hold meetings on carbon reduction strategies.
