CTOnews.com, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) GM recently unveiled three future models: the Cadillac LYRIQ, the Cadillac CELESTIQ and the Buick Wildcat concept electric car, all with ultra-long Mini LED backlit LCD panels.

Omdia released a report saying that the market demand for OLED display panels has also pushed up the demand for Mini LED backlit LCD panels. The advantages of Mini LED backlit LCD panel are high brightness, improved picture quality, energy saving, long display life, etc., and the supply chain is also more mature, which is conducive to the development of full array local dimming (FALD) and Mini LED backlit LCD panel in the automotive industry.

Omdia predicts shipments of FALD and Mini LED backlit display panels will grow from less than 2 million in 2023 to nearly 1000 million in 2027. The display panel size will also quickly exceed 20 inches, especially after 2026.

After introducing the OLED display panel of the Cadillac Escalade, GM shifted its focus to the Mini LED backlight display panel.

Cadillac LYRIQ: single 33-inch 9K1K AM Mini LED backlit liquid crystal display panel in August 2022, General Motors launched the 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ: the model is equipped with the industry-leading 33-inch 9K1K (8960x1316) advanced LED display panel (AM Mini LED backlit liquid crystal display panel). Unlike the new Cadillac Escalade, which has three OLED screens in one, LYRIQ is equipped with a full curved glass display panel. CTOnews.com learned that the panel can be divided into three different areas that display different content: the light control and head up display (HUD) control area, the dashboard area, and the entertainment audio and video information function area.

Dirac CELESTIQ: a 2-in-1 55-inch 12K1K AM Mini LED backlit LCD panel on CES 2022, Cadilla briefly shows the ultra-luxury CELESTIQ car. In July, GM finally released photos of the car's interior, equipped with five high-definition (HD) advanced LED panels, including a 2-to-1 55-inch advanced LCD panel. The 55-inch curved display panel combines a 35.x-inch screen and a 20.x-inch screen across the car's left and right A-pillar. The 20.x-inch display panel directly in front of passengers has an active privacy view function. The mass production version of the CELESTIQ is expected to make its debut as the 2025 model. According to Cadillac, the concepts shown in this version will basically be retained in mass production.

Buick Wildcat concept car: a 30.4-inch 6K1K AM Mini LED backlit LCD panel Cadillac unveiled the Buick Wildcat in June 2022, a new concept car designed to revolutionize the brand. The console of the car uses a 30.4-inch Mini LED backlit LCD panel. The model also uses ultra-thin headlights brought about by the design of Micro LED headlights.

OLED drives up demand for Mini LED backlit LCD panels

The market demand for OLED display panels is driving up the demand for Mini LED backlit LCD panels. Many automobile manufacturers are equipped with OLED display panels based on Mini LED backlight technology, the reason behind is that the brightness and life of OLED are still insufficient, and the price of large-size OLED panels is still high. FALD and Mini LED backlit LCD panels can bring local dimming ability, high brightness, long display life, and their supply chain has been mature for a long time.

Shipments of FALD and Mini LED backlit display panels will reach 1000 by 2027

It is expected that the market demand for FALD and Mini LED backlit LCD panels will increase rapidly in the next five years. Omdia expects shipments to grow from about 110,000 in 2022 to 1040 million in 2027. At present, the main shipments are concentrated in the size range of less than 20 inches. However, mainstream panel sizes are expected to quickly exceed 20 inches, especially after 2026, as more production capacity of sixth-generation LTPS and 8.x generation a-Si panels will be transferred to automotive display production. In addition, Mini LED backlit LCD panels are also the main display technology in the growing field of cross-vehicle width display panels (greater than 35 inches), mainly due to the production difficulties and high prices of large-size OLED display panels.
