Hubble glimpsed a fascinating nebula in the constellation Orion with very unique features.

The Hubble Space Telescope recently took new images of the reflection nebula NGC 1999, showing "special portraits" of rotating gas and dust clouds. According to a statement from NASA, the nebula is a relic of star formation and is named Orion V380. The most striking feature of this photo is the dark hole in the center of the nebula, shaped like a keyhole.

When Hubble first photographed the nebula in 1999, astronomers thought the dark center was a thing called the Bock Ball. The sphere is a cold cloud of gas, dust and other molecules that are so dense that they can block the passage of any light. But in subsequent observations, astronomers found that dark areas were actually empty spaces. At present, the origin of this keyhole feature is not clear.

The nebula is close to the Orion Nebula, about 1500 light-years away, and is located in the active star-forming region of the Milky way. The latest image is reported to have been created using archival data from Hubble wide-area Planetary camera 2, which uses a combination of ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared sensors to create images of the nebula we see.
