CTOnews.com, November 1, Counterpoint released a report saying that sales of Q3 smartphones in China fell 12% year-on-year in 2022, up 5% from the previous year.

Smartphone sales in China fell 12.4 per cent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2022 due to weak demand, according to analyst ARCHIE ZHANG. Apple took the crown in terms of market share growth in September, with its new iPhone series launched a week earlier than usual. It also helped Apple's share of sales reach 15%, the highest in the third quarter since 2016. Inventory problems for Android phone brands eased after the summer promotion. With the launch of new smartphones, the year-on-year decline in the fourth quarter may ease further.

Smartphone sales in China fell 12.4% in the third quarter of 2022 compared with the same period a year earlier, as China's economic growth and consumption remained sluggish, according to Counterpoint's monthly report on mobile phone sales. However, the market recorded 4.9 per cent month-on-month growth as the market gradually recovered from the control of major cities brought about by COVID-19 in the previous quarter. At the same time, strong demand for iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models also boosted the overall market this quarter.

CTOnews.com learned that in the third quarter of 2022, vivo (including iQOO) secured the No. 1 position with a market share of 19.9%, and the brand released more new smartphones than other OEM in the quarter. OPPO (including OnePlus) came in second with 18 per cent, while HONOR ranked third with 17.2 per cent. Apple's share is 15.3%, Xiaomi's share is 13.0%, Huawei's share is 9.1%, and the share of other phones is 2.5%.

The inventory situation of major OEM manufacturers has improved significantly after the summer promotion. Smartphone brands will usher in a busier fourth quarter, as there are more new products to be launched, which will help the market recover in the fourth quarter and may record a smaller year-on-year decline. Still, Counterpoint estimates that smartphone sales are likely to see a double-digit year-on-year decline in 2022.

Commenting on the competitive landscape, research analyst Mengmeng Zhang said: "in the third quarter of 2022, vivo, OPPO and HONOR are still the top three smartphone OEM in China. But sales of vivo and OPPO fell more than 20 per cent year-on-year, while HONOR grew 2.5 per cent. The decline in vivo and OPPO may be due to the collapse of China's smartphone market and the rapid return of HONOR. Huawei also performed well, up 4.8% from a year earlier. Despite the lack of 5G support, its Nova 10 series and Enjoy 50 are very popular with consumers. "

"the ecommerce market has also changed," Mengmeng added. OPPO had hoped to expand online through OnePlus, and OnePlus Ace Pro achieved this goal. Canada's total sales in China grew 9.6 per cent year-on-year and 44.3 per cent month-on-month. "

Archie Zhang, a research analyst, said: "Apple's sales grew 6.8 per cent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2022. This is mainly due to strong demand for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models, as well as the launch of the new iPhone line a week earlier than before. In addition, the US brand has not suffered as serious supply problems as in 2021." According to Counterpoint's weekly mobile phone sales data in China, we can see that demand for iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max remains strong in October.
