CTOnews.com, Nov. 1, Microsoft has been developing a "Drop" feature for Chromium version of Edge (the default browser for Windows 11 and Windows 10) for the past few months. The tool was first added to Edge browsers in May and recently updated another new feature in Edge Canary channels: screenshot integration.

Microsoft Edge's "Drop" function is integrated in the right sidebar of the browser, which also has shortcut keys for Apple Music, WhatsApp, Messenger and other services.

The "Drop" interface is similar to a messaging service, but files shared on the "Drop" panel can only be accessed on the user's own device. In other words, users can only send messages to themselves.

Users can send anything through Microsoft Edge "Drop". During the test, mpv.exe (a popular open source media player) was downloaded and shared, and Edge uploaded it to OneDrive cloud storage. You can then open an Edge browser on any device and download the file.

Users can share Windows files, such as .exe, .msu, APK, photos, notes, etc. Microsoft has been developing new features for the "Drop" panel, with the latest addition of a switch that can capture and upload screenshots directly and share it on the device.

Users can click on the new screenshot capture icon to capture anything on the screen. You can also edit screenshots and outlines anywhere and upload them to the Drop panel.

Microsoft Edge's "Drop" is actually provided by OneDrive, which may actually be cloud storage, but Microsoft does not give away storage space for free. Edge shows the space currently in use, which is clearly related to the OneDrive plan of the user's personal Microsoft account.

CTOnews.com has learned that anything uploaded to "Drop" is included in the user's storage plan. Of course, if users have to rely on cloud storage services to share files, they can use OneDrive to share files directly. However, Edge "Drop" would be more convenient.

Microsoft may be planning to push its cloud storage service to more users, or even promote OneDrive within Edge.

Microsoft Edge browser also supports macOS, iOS, Android, Linux and so on.
