CTOnews.com, November 1, if you want to buy a Nvidia RTX 4090 graphics card to use with your graphics card docking station, you may want to reconsider. According to the latest tests, this scheme will have a serious loss of game performance.

JarrodsTech on YouTube released a video showing RTX 4090 docking through an external video card connected to a laptop. In his tests, this combination severely impaired the game performance of RTX 4090, with most games achieving up to 50 per cent performance.

For testing, Jarrod used two different laptops: an Asustek Zenbook 14 OLED with an i7-1260p processor and a gigabyte 17X game book with a higher performance i9-12900HX. Jarrod also uses the R9 7950X desktop as a benchmark to compare how much performance the RTX 4090 retains in the external video docking configuration.

The hardware parameters of ▲ desktops are purchased according to the current mainstream purchase of video card docking stations. Jarrod uses Lightning 3 graphics card docking stations with 850W external power supply.

Tests showed that with laptops and graphics card docking stations, the game performance was lost by about 35% to 82%, with Ares 4 performing the best and watchdog: Legion the worst.

CTOnews.com learned that 3DMark PCI Express tests showed that the bandwidth of Lightning 3 graphics card docking station was 2.33 GB / s, which was much lower than the 26.85 GB / s measured by desktop PC. It seems that the RTX 4090 graphics card docking station had better have Lightning 4 or future Lightning 5 in order to give full play to its full performance.
