Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Coje_He for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, October 31, CTOnews.com reported the day before yesterday that Google Chrome has begun to remove support for the JPEG-XL image format in its browser, and now a Google engineer has given them a reason to abandon the image format.

According to previous reports, Google's Chrome / Chromium browser is planning to release a patch to remove support for the still-experimental JPEG-XL image format from the web browser, which will scrap support for JPEG-XL images in Chrome 110and later versions.

Considering that JPEG-XL is still very young in its life cycle and has gained more and more industry interest and support, Google's move comes as a surprise. Google engineers commented on the Chromium JPEG-XL issue tracker today and gave their reasons.

The reasons given by the engineer are as follows:

Experimental logos and code should not be retained indefinitely

There is not enough interest in the whole ecosystem to continue the JPEG XL experiment.

The JPEG-XL image format does not bring enough incremental advantages over the existing format, so there is no reason to enable it by default

By removing the flags and code in M110, we can reduce the maintenance burden and enable us to focus on improving the existing formats supported in Chrome

Given that the code for the JPEG-XL image format was frozen at the end of 2020, the file format was standardized only last year, and the coding system was standardized only earlier this year, it is difficult for Google to say that there is not enough interest in the entire ecosystem around JPEG-XL.

Some netizens pointed out that WebP is not pursuing the launch of Google 2 as an image format, but only a Google experiment. It seems that Google will focus on eventually further advancing the WebP and AVIF image formats.

CTOnews.com learned that JPEG-XL format is a royalty-free bitmap file format that supports lossy and lossless compression. It aims to go beyond existing bitmap formats and become a general alternative to them.
