CTOnews.com, October 30 (Xinhua)-- Apple's iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are rumored to use different camera updates next year, in part because Apple will further distinguish between Pro and non-Pro models. A new report from analyst Guo Mingyi today said that one of the rumor updates will not be realized.

Guo Mingyi said on Twitter today that the Apple iPhone 15 Pro series is not expected to be equipped with a new "8p" lens, a rear camera with eight plastic lenses.

The "8p" here refers to the number of elements in the lens. Compared with the iPhone 14 Pro, the iPhone 15 Pro has one more optical element. Adding components to the lens has advantages and disadvantages, but when manufacturers use existing lens designs and add components, it is usually to reduce distortion, which is especially important in wide-angle lenses.

Although the iPhone 15 Pro model may not get this new camera upgrade, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to have an even bigger change: support for new periscope lenses. It is reported that the new periscope lens will be exclusive to the large-screen version of iPhone 15 Pro, which may also be called iPhone 15 Ultra next year.

CTOnews.com learned that periscope lenses rely on prisms to reflect light to multiple internal lenses that are 90 degrees from the camera sensor. This makes the lens much longer than the telephoto lens, resulting in better optical zoom. The telephoto lens on the iPhone 13 Pro model provides only 3x optical zoom and 15x digital zoom.

For comparison purposes, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is equipped with a periscope lens that can achieve 10x optical zoom and up to 100x digital zoom. Rumor has it that Apple may choose 5x optical zoom. More details of Apple's implementation of the periscope lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 15 Ultra, are unclear, but ideally this will bring the iPhone phone closer to the features already provided by Samsung's flagship phone.
