When the light of the flash hits the main body, the main body becomes very bright, and the camera reduces the exposure value in order to get a normally exposed photo. The background is so far away that it is hardly illuminated by the flash, and when the camera reduces the exposure, the background darkens. This is the Calendering effect of the flash.
