CTOnews.com Netflix has confirmed that it will charge users an extra fee if they share their account password with someone outside of their family.

The company said it would start charging for account sharing in early 2023, and such fees would be added to billing details in the form of "extra members." Although the company did not disclose how it would charge for sharing accounts with others.

CTOnews.com reported that US video streaming giant Netflix announced its third-quarter financial results for fiscal 2022 in the middle of this month.

The company's third-quarter revenue was $7.926 billion, up 5.9% from $7.483 billion a year earlier; net income was $1.398 billion, down 3.5% from $1.449 billion a year earlier; and earnings per share was $3.10, compared with $3.19 a year earlier, according to the earnings report.

Netflix revealed on its previous earnings call that it was losing subscribers and facing significant losses, but revealed on Tuesday during its most recent quarterly earnings call that it would start charging users extra membership fees if they shared account passwords with anyone other than family members. The new rules will take effect in 2023.

"Finally, we came up with a thoughtful approach to monetizing account sharing, which we will roll out more widely starting in early 2023. After listening to consumer feedback, we will offer these five products, excluding China and Russia. Users can transfer their Netflix profiles to their own accounts, sharers can manage their devices more easily, and they can create sub-accounts ("extra members") if they want to pay for family or friends. It is worth mentioning that Netflix revealed in March 2022 that it would crack down on "illegal sharing," when the company said it wanted exploiters to stop sharing passwords.

While Netflix hasn't disclosed its plans, previous tests in some Latin American countries suggest it will charge $2.99, or a quarter of the $12 monthly subscription fee.

Earlier this month, Netflix also announced that it would roll out ad-only subscriptions starting next month in 12 countries, including the United States, Britain, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and South Korea, starting at $6.99.
