Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, Oct. 29, according to Vice, Reddit user PoisonWaffle3 recently posted that he managed to get a 10-year-old cache server from Netflix for free, although it was made a decade ago, but its configuration is not low even by today's standards, and has amazing 262TB storage space.

The netizen said the Netflix server was provided by the company he worked for, which is an Internet service provider. Obviously, the Internet service provider is upgrading its infrastructure with newer hardware, which is why the netizen managed to get the server for free.

According to Vice, this server is called Netflix caching server and belongs to Netflix's Open connection content delivery Network (CDN). This system is still in use today and is designed to reduce the overall bandwidth requirements of the Netflix platform by providing ISP with its own Netflix cache server. Enables Netflix content to be played directly from ISP's server rather than from Netflix's server farm.

The server is painted bright red in the form of a 4U rack server chassis. There is a LCD screen in front to monitor the health of the server and a pair of USB ports. On the left is a pair of power supplies that may support hot swappable.

In terms of specifications, the server uses an Ultra Micro motherboard, equipped with Intel 10-core super-threaded E52650L v2 chip, 64GB DDR3 memory and a 10GbE network card. In terms of storage, the system uses 6 500GB Meguiar solid state drives and 36 7.2TB 7200RPM HDD, a total of 262TB.

According to Dave Temkin, a former Netflix executive, the series of servers used to run mainly FreeBSD systems and some Linux systems.

CTOnews.com learned that the netizen tested and maintained it (replacing a noisy fan and a bad disk) and turned it into a very large NAS running TrueNAS.
