CTOnews.com, October 28 (Xinhua) R Umamaheshwaran, director of the manned Space Flight Center of the Indian Space Research Organization, said at the Indian Space Conference in New Delhi that India will conduct a series of flight tests for its first manned space flight from February next year.
India plans to test the crew cabin with Chinook helicopters and Cmure 17A transport aircraft. As part of the Gaganyan manned space program, the crew module will send astronauts into orbit for three days as part of the Gaganyaan manned space mission.
Speaking at the Indian Space Congress, he said that scientists of the Indian Space Research Organization have completed the design of the environmental control system, which will ensure that astronauts provide stable environmental living conditions for the crew service module when orbiting the Earth.
The Indian Space Research Organization plans to conduct at least 17 different tests next year before launching an unmanned space flight in December.
CTOnews.com learned that India established the Gaganyaan mission on Independence Day in 2018, and the initial goal is to achieve this goal by 2022, as this year coincides with the 75th anniversary of India's liberation from colonial rule, but has been delayed many times due to the epidemic and other reasons, and now the goal is to conduct the first space flight in late 2024 or early 2025.
R Umamaheshwaran said that designing the crew module and environmental control system is a challenging task because astronauts should be as comfortable as possible even during the re-entry phase, and the temperature outside the capsule may exceed 2000 degrees Celsius.
"the crew cabin in which the astronauts will travel has been completed and manufacturing work is under way. We will see it in six months," he said on the sidelines of an event organized by the Satellite Communications Industry Association.
"We have to provide oxygen, remove carbon dioxide, ensure humidity and temperature, and make sure there is no fire hazard. This is a very complex technology, and no country will give it to us for nothing."
"We have the ability to design, so we're doing it, and it only takes a little bit of time. We've finished all the designs, and now it's time to prove that everything we design is safe enough. That's what we're working on."
