On October 28, IDC, an international data company, released its smartphone market report for the third quarter of 2022 today. The report shows that China's smartphone shipments in the third quarter were about 71.13 million units, down 11.9% year-on-year, continuing the sluggish performance of the domestic market in the first half of the year. However, the high-end market was less affected, with an overall share of 22.4%, still up 1.9 percentage points year-on-year and 2.3 percentage points month-on-month.
vivo returned to the first place in China, specifically to each brand. In the third quarter, the top five domestic smartphone shipments were vivo, Glory, OPPO, Apple and Xiaomi. In addition to Apple, the shipments of the other four manufacturers all fell year-on-year, and only Apple's mobile phone shipments maintained positive growth.
Vivo's shipments in the third quarter of this year were about 14.2 million units, down 20.5% year-on-year, and its market share reached 20.0%, returning to the No.1 position in domestic market shipments. With its good product strength and competitive price positioning, its sub-brand iQOO has continuously gained market recognition, and its market share has continuously increased, reaching 4.6% of the domestic market in the third quarter. The performance of vivo X series is also relatively bright, maintaining a leading position in the domestic mid-to-high-end market.
Glory shipped about 12.7 million units in the third quarter of this year, down 9.1% year-on-year and maintaining a market share of 17.9%. Among them, Glory 70 series has maintained the rapid growth momentum since its listing. With its attractive appearance and good performance optimization, the X40 series has quickly become a "hit" product since its launch. Products such as the Play 30 series and Play 6 series continue to be important choices in the entry-level market.
OPPO shipped about 11.6 million units in the third quarter, down 27.9% year-on-year, with a market share of 16.3%, ranking third. Reno8 series shipments continue to rise, maintaining a leading position in the mid-market. The A57 and A97 models are the main models in OPPO shipments, with shipments exceeding 1.5 million units.
Apple shipped about 10.8 million units in the third quarter, up 2.5% year-on-year, making it the only mobile phone brand among the top five brands to maintain positive growth, with a market share of 15.1%. The iPhone 14 Pro series of two products are hot, due to Apple's initial lack of market expectations, so far is still in a tight supply state. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have limited market response due to limited upgrades compared to previous generations, while the iPhone 13 series is still favored by consumers.
Xiaomi shipped about 9 million units in the third quarter, down 17.9% year-on-year, accounting for 12.7% of the market share. Redmi is still the main shipping force, among which Redmi K50 series and Redmi Note 11 series are the main sales models, and the newly launched Xiaomi 12S series has also gained good market reputation, which will help promote Xiaomi's growth in the high-end market in the future.
Foldable screen mobile phones are developing rapidly, and future product prices are expected to continue to explore. This report shows that at present, major mobile phone manufacturers are still focusing on screens, cameras, large memory and chips in product research and development, especially on folding screens.
In the third quarter of 2022, China shipped more than 1 million folding-screen products, up about 246% year-on-year, the largest single-season shipment ever, showing that consumers are increasingly accepting folding-screen phones.
Among the major manufacturers of folding screen mobile phones, Huawei still occupies the first position in the domestic folding screen market with its strong brand power and product power, with a market share of 44.9%. Samsung's Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 are selling well, ranking second with 22.2% market share. The newly released X Fold + series helped vivo rise to third place in the folding screen market with a market share of 11.9%. Xiaomi's new MIX FOLD 2 also gained a better market reputation than the previous generation with its thin and light appearance, with its market share increasing to 9.3%, ranking fourth.
With more and more manufacturers paying attention to folding screen mobile phones, it is expected that there will be a number of folding screen mobile phones launched one after another, and the price of folding screen mobile phones is expected to continue to explore.
Guo Tianxiang, senior analyst of IDC China, said at the dynamic media communication meeting of China's smartphone market in the third quarter that due to the influence of domestic and foreign economic environment and some other factors, China's smartphone market continues to be depressed and it is difficult to recover in the short term. In the face of difficulties, industry participants adopt a more pragmatic and cautious strategy, reasonably and effectively control inventory, while still maintaining or even increasing investment in product research and development, whether from the hardware or software level, strive to create distinctive and differentiated products, to stimulate more consumers 'desire to purchase and change.
