CTOnews.com, Oct. 28 (Reuters)-the European Union reached an agreement on October 27 local time to ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars from 2035, an agreement aimed at accelerating the transition to electric vehicles and tackling climate change.

Reported that EU countries, the European Parliament and the European Commission negotiators drafting the new law agreed that automakers must achieve 100% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2035, which means that from 2035, the new fuel vehicles will not be sold in the 27 countries of the European Union.

Jan Huitema, the European Parliament's chief negotiator, said: "this agreement is good news for car drivers. New zero-emission cars will become cheaper, more affordable and more acceptable to everyone."

Timmermans, the EU's head of climate policy, said the agreement sent a strong signal to industry and consumers that "Europe is moving towards zero-emission cars".

CTOnews.com learned that the agreement also stipulates that new cars sold from 2030 will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 55% from 2021 levels, far higher than the previous target of 37.5% reduction from 2030.

Many carmakers have announced a shift to electrification as regulators step up pressure on carmakers to rein in their carbon footprints. Volkswagen boss Thomas Schaefer said this week that from 2033, the brand will only produce electric cars in Europe.
