CTOnews.com, October 27 (Xinhua) according to the website of the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, researchers and collaborators of the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences recently synthesized a new nuclide Actinium-204. this is the fourth nuclide outside the proton drip line of Actinium. The relevant results are published on Physics Letters B.

▲ inflatable recoil spectrometer SHANS2 | Source: using the beam provided by the Lanzhou heavy Ion Accelerator (HIRFL) and the China Superheavy element Research Accelerator (CAFE2), the new nuclide Actinium-204was successfully synthesized by fusion evaporation reaction on the inflatable recoil spectrometer, and its α decay energy and half-life were measured. The results are consistent with the theoretical prediction. CTOnews.com learned that Actinium-204is the 35th new nuclide discovered in modern physics and the first new nuclide synthesized on the new inflatable recoil spectrometer SHANS2.

Since the half-life of the nucleus is related to the energy of the α particles released by the nucleus, there is usually a synchronous odd-even fluctuation between the half-life and the α decay energy with the neutron number of the isotope. The researchers found that this synchronous fluctuation did not occur in Actinium-204 and other nuclides with less than 119 neutrons. It is revealed that compared with Actinium-205 with even neutrons, Actinium-204 with odd neutrons has a lower probability of forming α clusters near the surface of the nucleus, that is, unpaired neutrons in the nucleus can hinder the formation of α clusters in the nucleus.

This study provides data on the mass and decay of nuclides Actinium-204 and Actinium-205 extremely far from the β-stability line. This information is helpful for people to understand the role of mononuclear in the process of α-decay.
