In June 2018, the company said Instagram had more than 1 billion monthly active users. Since then, the app has undergone its biggest transformation since it was acquired by Meta 10 years ago. Instagram, which used to show only content posted by people you follow, now uses algorithms to show users more content they might be interested in. The service also added TikTok-style Short Video Reels and gained priority over other video formats on the platform.

Meta made these changes in the hope of avoiding Instagram being marginalized in an increasingly competitive social media industry. Over the past few years, TikTok has emerged with popular themed videos. On TikTok, the system uses algorithms to recommend content to users who focus on specific topics, rather than just showing content posted by creators that users focus on.

Meta's social media platform must keep users sticky, allowing them to spend more time on Facebook and Instagram. The vast majority of the company's revenue comes from ads placed on these platforms, but uncertainty about the economic outlook has led marketers to spend less on digital ads recently, forcing Meta and competitors to compete for smaller budgets.

Instagram was acquired by Meta in 2012 and currently uses advertising as its main source of revenue. WhatsApp, acquired by Meta in 2014, is still in its infancy in terms of exploring business models.
