On October 26, NASA's James Webb Space Telescope recently captured images of star formation occurring during galactic collisions.

This wave of star formation is caused by a pair of galaxies IC 1623 colliding with each other. The merging galaxies are producing stars 20 times faster than the Milky way, scientists say.

The galaxy collision has been photographed by Hubble and other telescopes before. But because IC 1623 is wrapped in thick interstellar dust, astronomers cannot go deep inside the galaxy to observe star formation.

The Weber Space Telescope can observe deep space in the infrared band. As a result, the Weber Telescope was able to penetrate interstellar dust and observe a large amount of infrared light emitting from the center of the galaxy, forming a glowing region of eight stars.

In contrast to Hubble's early IC 1623 images, Weber's images reveal a whole new layer of merged galaxy structure, bright red and orange blocks of matter near the center of the image.

Image source: ESA / Webb, NASA & CSA, L. Armus & A. Evans Weber Telescope captured two galaxies about 270 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Cetaceus. Astronomers speculate that galactic mergers may also create a supermassive black hole.

The photo was composed of data captured by MIRI cameras, NIRCam cameras and NIRSpec spectrometers of Weber's four sets of instruments, the European Space Agency said in a statement on Tuesday.
