On October 25th, industry sources said that as mature automotive chips are still in short supply, some automakers around the world are turning to advanced process nodes to make their chips, especially for new models and electric vehicles.

An analysis by McKinsey shows that automotive chips with production process nodes of 90nm or above will be in short supply for a long time, and most OEMs are still reluctant to upgrade the chips because they have to face the high cost of replacing designs and certification in addition to the safety tests required for new chips.

McKinsey estimates that automotive chips with 90nm and above will still account for 67 per cent of total demand for automotive chips by 2030, and its global supply will grow at a compound annual rate of 5 per cent between 2021 and 2026, suggesting that such chips will remain tight in the coming years.

But automotive supply chain participants are integrating advanced process chips into new models, which involves comprehensive new design, certification and mass production, skipping the area of chips, where there is the most serious shortage. Sources say they are also trying to use new process chips for their existing models to ease the shortage of mature chips.

Typically, mainstream carmakers in the United States, Europe, Japan and South Korea will take three to five years to design, test and verify new chips for traditional models, and gradually embark on the track of adopting new process chips for traditional models and new electric vehicles. Tesla and Chinese electric car manufacturers have more flexibility in designing new electric vehicle chips and are more willing to adopt more advanced process nodes.
