Phoenix New Media, Beijing, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) Facebook parent company Meta criticized Apple on Tuesday for changing the terms of its app store to take a cut of social media advertising revenue. Meta said Apple's move was "weakening other companies in the digital economy."
Apple announced the policy change this week, requiring users and advertisers to use in-app purchases when paying for "promotion" posts on apps such as TikTok and Meta's Instagram. Apple typically charges a commission of up to 30 per cent on in-app purchases, which means that companies like Meta flow some of their advertising revenue to Apple.
"Apple has previously said it does not take a share of developers' advertising revenue. Now they have clearly changed their mind," Meta said. "We are still committed to providing small businesses with an easy way to advertise and grow their business on our apps."
Apple has yet to comment. Other social media companies, such as Twitter and TikTok, have not commented.
